USA BOXING'S STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF WOMEN'S BOXING
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - USA Boxing fully supports the bid for women's boxing to be added to the Olympic competition schedule for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Boxing is currently the only Olympic sport without a women's counterpart on the Olympic program and the number of participants worldwide continues to grow.
Over 120 countries across the globe participate in the sport and the 2008 will showcase the fifth World Championship event in women's boxing. In addition, the skill level of female boxers in the United States and worldwide is currently extremely high, as evidenced by the two women's feature bouts showcased at the 2007 AIBA World Championships.
"We strongly urge the IOC to add the sport of women's boxing to the Olympic docket for the 2012 Olympic Games," commented USA Boxing CEO, Jim Millman. "Women boxers have earned the right to showcase their talents on the Olympic stage, and its time that boxing end its distinction as the only Olympic sport to exclude women."
